Revolutionizing mining operations with drone-embedded radar technology

| Radaz | Blog

In August 2024, Radaz participated in an innovative drone imaging and field data collection campaign at the Kevitsa Mine in Sodankylä, Finland, as part of the Golden Ram Project.

This initiative aimed to enhance remote sensing data services for environmental monitoring, offering innovative solutions for industries like mining. By combining drone-embedded radar technology with artificial intelligence, we are transforming the way these operations handle critical data.

The Golden Ram Project: pioneering environmental monitoring

The Golden Ram Project was designed to collect essential data for monitoring soil moisture, water levels, volume mapping in tailings ponds, and water quality in nearby water bodies.

At the heart of the project is Radaz’s cutting-edge radar system, embedded in drones, providing high-resolution data to meet the complex demands of mining operations.

Advanced drone technology in action

Several drone-based remote sensing instruments were deployed throughout the project. This included a high-resolution, multifrequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensor capable of operating across P, L, and C microwave frequency bands.

This innovative radar technology, never before used in mining environments, was essential for collecting accurate, multifaceted data on surface moisture levels and material differentiation in soil and vegetation.

With the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, Radaz ensured real-time data validation and analysis. Soil moisture sensors were strategically installed near the tailings pond to support the validation of drone SAR measurements.

Operating at altitudes of 90-100 meters, drones captured SAR data ideal for interferometric processing.

A multi-layered approach to monitoring

In addition to radar data, thermal and visible-range imagery were also collected by drones to monitor seepage at the tailings pond and other environmental concerns.

Thermal flights over the tailings pond, surrounding forest, and nearby lake provided comprehensive insights, improving both safety and operational efficiency. RGB orthophotos and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) offered additional support for thematic mapping, always aligned with the project's environmental goals.

Radaz: transforming mining efficiency with AI and drone technology

Radaz’s innovative approach to integrating AI with drone-embedded radar technology allows for more precise monitoring, ensuring both the safety and sustainability of mining operations.
